American players will receive more money to play in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
The PGA of America announced Monday it would increase the amount of stipend it gives to players to $500,000, a $300,000 increase from previous years. In the release, the increase is so players have money to give to a charity of their choice.
The release stated no players asked to be compensated.
“Golf is a long-established vehicle for good, and it’s exciting to imagine the impact the members of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team will deliver for worthy causes and communities across the country, including the many initiatives that support the growth of the game,” the PGA of America said in a release.
“We are grateful to the many players and captains through the years who have so passionately represented our country and look forward to a memorable 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.”
Paying players in the Ryder Cup has been a hot-button topic this fall, as reports have leaked about pay increases and whether players should be paid at all. Players from Tiger Woods to 2025 U.S. captain Keegan Bradley have chimed in.
American Ryder Cup players have received stipends of $200,000 since 1999. Those on the European side aren’t compensated, with stars like Rory McIlroy saying he’d ‘pay for the privilege’ to compete in the event.
